Ak-Chin Link Pipeline Repair and Mitigation

Project Owner: Ak-Chin Indian Community
Project Type: Design-Build

This project evaluated corrosion and pipeline material deterioration in numerous segments of the 8.4 mile long Ak-Chin Link Pipeline.

Achen-Gardner crews exposed segments of 78” pipe near the intersection of John Wayne Parkway and Peters and Nall Road. We cleaned the pipe and evaluating the existing mortar coating and wire wrap of the Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP). We performed repairs in critical locations and poured a concrete reinforced encasement around the pipe to mitigate further deterioration. Additional services under this project included soil borings and geotechnical analysis, cathodic protection system improvements, and continuing soil continuity and resistivity testing to determine best methods for long-term corrosion mitigation.

Phase 1 was completed from 10/18 to 12/18 and included the repair of more than 300 LF of 78” pipe by utilizing a reinforced concrete encasement.

Phase 2 was completed from 10/19 to 12/19 and included the repair of more than 500 LF of 78” pipe by utilizing a reinforced concrete encasement.

Phase 3 included further assessments and repairs. We constructed concrete encasements of the 78” prestressed concrete cylinder pipeline in eight places (total 192 LF) and have replaced a 24 foot section with 78” welded steel pipe containing a 48” side outlet and manhole for future access. All work was completed within a 30 day shutdown window.

Phase 4 included in-service inspections of the 48” Santa Rosa Siphon and 48” Lateral B Vekol Wash Siphon. We utilized a PipeDiver tool to assess the condition of these 48” pipelines without dewatering them, mitigating disruption to area farmers whose crops are served irrigation water by way of each pipeline. This phase also required the removal and replacement of 10 manhole lids, cathodic protection improvements, furnishing of an 84” steel pipe repair kit, and additional inspections, investigations, and repairs.
